Beppu bamboo crafts
Beppu bamboo crafts are produced in Beppu, Oita in the island of Kyushu in south Japan. This city is well known for the Onsen (hot springs). The bamboo used are grown and harvested locally.
The craft is made entirely by hand and uses a distinctive range of basic bamboo weaving technique. There are eight basic patterns of weaving and more than 200 combination of weaving patterns!
Beppu bamboo craft originated in Nara period (8th century), so it has a very long history.
There are products such as bowls, vase (above picture with brown) or lamp shades to name a few.
