Kiryu Washi paper

Washi is probably a well known term in English as a Japanese traditional papercraft. Kiryu Washi is a Washi produced in Kiryu City in Japan. It is said to have originated in Edo Period (1603-1868).

The region is also well known for producing beautiful textile such as dyed and woven textiles. Kiryu River, which is used to rinse fabric when they dye with Yuzen-dye is also perfect for the Washi paper production.

Its characteristics lie in its sheerness, texture and stability to be used for painting as well as calligraphy. 

Nowadays you can find Kiryu Washi products such as book cover, postcards, lamp shade and so on.
